Network Outages at Multiple Buildings
Update - The estimated restoration time for network service at the Alaska Airlines Center (AAC) has been updated to approximately 5:00 P.M.

Identified - We have identified the root cause of the network issue and implemented a fix for the affected buildings.

Network service has been restored to all impacted locations except the Alaska Airlines Center (AAC).

We are actively working to restore connectivity at the AAC and expect service to be restored within approximately two hours.

Investigating - We’re currently experiencing network outages at multiple buildings, including Health Sciences Building (HSB) and Alaska Airlines Center (AAC).

UAA IT Services is working to identify the root cause and implement a solution.

Users may experience issues connecting to the Wi-Fi, wired network, and campus phones. AAC will be down for a few hours. The main switch died.

Microsoft 365 License Changes & Issues
Identified - Microsoft is discontinuing the M365 A1 Plus license, and some users are being transitioned from the M365 A1 "Plus" license to the M365 A1 license. This results in a loss of access to the desktop version of Office 365 applications, but all users should still be able to use the web-based apps at https://m365.cloud.microsoft/apps/ (requires UA login).

This change affects Crafts & Trades staff, Adjunct/Temporary Faculty, and Emeritus Faculty members. If you're not a member of these groups and are experiencing issues with the Microsoft Office suite, please reach out to your campus's IT helpdesk!

Identified - We’ve determined that some new University students, faculty and staff cannot access Microsoft 365 applications upon initial login.

This problem may impact multiple users across the system due to a malfunction in automatic licensing.

We’re working to restore Microsoft 365 automatic licensing however during the interim please contact the Technical Support Center at (907) 786-4646.

Receiving an error in Microsoft Office, "Error license is about to expire."
Identified - We are aware of an ongoing issue affecting Microsoft A1 Plus licenses. As a result, some users may temporarily lose access to desktop Office applications, especially Adjunct Faculty and Crafts & Trades employees.
However, you can continue to use all Microsoft 365 online apps (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.) through your web browser by opening from OneDrive or going to https://m365.cloud.microsoft/create.

Our team is actively working with Microsoft and organizational leadership to identify and implement a long-term solution. We appreciate your patience while this issue is being addressed.

An update will be posted when it is resolved.

What's happening: We're upgrading our database infrastructure as part of an initiative to modernize our systems and complete large-scale software versioning improvements. This work keeps our technology stack current, high-performing, and aligned with the security and compliance standards our customers rely on.

When: 2026-07-01 at 11:00 UTC (2 AM AKST). The estimated duration is about 30 minutes. In some cases, the window may run up to an hour, and we've planned for that so it won't catch you off guard.

Why outside the normal maintenance window: The scope of this initiative spans nearly our entire hosted environment and needs to be completed on an accelerated schedule ahead of the new semester. We can't fit all of it into the usual 1st and 3rd Thursday windows, so we're restricting every upgrade to off-hour, lowest-usage windows, with work beginning between midnight and 2 a.m. Your maintenance time of day will be honored in all cases.

What to expect: Canvas will be temporarily unavailable during the window described above. No action is required from you or your users.

Scheduled - As part of an industry-wide Microsoft security update, the University is standardizing how its central authentication system (Active Directory) handles encryption. During this maintenance we will bring all domain controllers, the servers that verify usernames and passwords, into a single, consistent configuration. This is a preparatory step that lets us safely complete the move to stronger encryption ahead of a Microsoft deadline later this year.

The work will be performed in a scheduled maintenance window and involves restarting the authentication servers one at a time. Because the remaining servers continue handling logins throughout, no disruption to signing in, email, or other services is expected, and no action is required by anyone.
